The Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM), Ranchi is a statutory body established by the Government of India under the provisions of the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976 (60 of 1976), deemed to have been established under section 21 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. It is the only apex institute of its kind in South and Southeast Asia.
Mission and Vision
The mission of IILM is to disseminate knowledge in the field of Legal Metrology to the officials of Central/State Governments and UTs through different training activities and publications, and to raise awareness among various stakeholders of the country related to the field of Legal Metrology and consumer protection.
The vision of IILM is to be a world-class institute for training, research, and development in the field of Legal Metrology, and to play a leading role in promoting consumer protection and fair trade.
Training
IILM conducts 32 courses in the field of Legal Metrology and its allied branches, exclusively for the Legal Metrology officers of India. Out of these courses, IILM conducts three Basic Training Courses (BTCs) each year for the newly recruited Legal Metrology Officers (LMOs) of India. The BTC is a four-month course that covers all aspects of Legal Metrology, including weights and measures, packaging, and consumer protection.
In addition to the BTC, IILM also conducts specialized training courses on various topics related to Legal Metrology, such as:
- Testing and calibration of weights and measures
- Inspection of weights and measures
- Enforcement of Legal Metrology laws and regulations
- Consumer protection
- Packaging and labeling
- Quality management systems
Research and Development
IILM has a well-established research and development division that is engaged in various projects related to Legal Metrology. The institute has also developed several innovative products and technologies in the field of Legal Metrology, such as:
- A portable reference standard for mass
- A laser marking system for weights and measures
- A software package for the management of weights and measures data
International Collaboration
IILM is a member of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and collaborates with various other international organizations and institutes in the field of Legal Metrology. The institute also hosts and participates in various international conferences and workshops on Legal Metrology.

The institute has trained thousands of Legal Metrology officers, who are responsible for enforcing Legal Metrology laws and regulations across the country. - Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university
- Minimum 50% marks in the qualifying examination
- Age limit: 30 years (Relaxation in the age limit is applicable for reserved category candidates)
